Au pair in Luxembourg

Official Au Pair in Luxembourg Program Information

There is no official au pair in Luxembourg program, however you can still become an au pair in Luxembourg. Host families who want to have an au pair should register them as a homemaker. It can be difficult however for non-EU nationals to receive the permits and visas required to work as an au pair in Luxembourg. See visa information below for requirements for your country of origin.

Au Pair in Luxembourg Mandatory Criteria
  • An au pair in Luxembourg must be between 18-27 years old
  • Have a work contract between the au pair and host family
  • Have certified copies of a valid passport or ID, doctors certificate, non-conviction certificate and drivers licence is preferable
Au Pair in Luxembourg General InformationPocket Money
  • There are no pocket money rules for an au pair in Luxembourg. TheBestAupair recommends approximately 260 euros per month, or other amount by agreement
Working hours, free time and holidays
  • There are no rules for working hours and free time for an au pair in Luxembourg. We recommend up to 40 hours maximum per week, comprising 30 hours of work and 2-3 nights of babysitting in the evenings
  • There are no rules for holidays for an au pair in Luxembourg. We recommend 2 full days free time per week, including at least one Sunday per month and one week of paid holidays per 6 months of work

Accommodation and meals
  • An Au pair in Luxembourg must have a single bedroom in the family home, be provided 3 meals per day and free access to the family home
Travel costs
  • All travel expenses must be paid by the au pair unless an agreement is made otherwise
Language skills and course
  • To be an au pair in Luxembourg, a basic knowledge of French or German is recommended
  • We also recommend au pairs enrol in a language course
Length of stay
  • There are no official rules on how long an au pair in Luxembourg can stay. Please negotiate with your host family once visa requirements are understood
Insurances
  • The au pair must be declared to the Centre Commun de la Securite Sociale (CCSS) to have basic medical and accident cover
  • We recommend you have a comprehensive insurance policy for accident, medical and liability coverage if your coverage from your home country does not cover you for being an au pair in Luxembourg
Job Duties
  • Au pair in Luxembourg duties include childcare and light housework
Driving
  • If you are required to drive as an au pair in Luxembourg, you will need a full, clean driver's licence
  • We recommends obtaining an international driving permit from your home country if your licence is not valid on its own in Luxembourg
  • Discuss with your host family what happens if you have a car accident, who pays, and have your agreements put in the contract
Visa InformationAt present, EU nationals (excluding Romania and Bulgaria) or nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland must only declare their residency at their local authority office within three months of arrival.

Non-EU nationals must obtain a residence permit.

For non-EU nationals and Romanian and Bulgarian nationals, you must first complete your declaration of arrival, then go to the office of immigration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Several documents are required when applying for a residence permit:

  • Valid travel documents and passport
  • Evidence of financial means
  • Current health certificate
  • Work contract (as an au pair in Luxembourg)
  • You may also require a certificate of good character or record of a police check
Au pairs must have a written work contract to work as an au pair in Luxembourg, and it must include working hours and a list of responsibilities.  Non-EU nationals are subject to the laws regarding foreign employees coming to and staying in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The au pair must be declared to the Centre Commun de la Securite Sociale (CCSS). Host families are then required to submit a single statement on wages paid on a periodic basis. The au pair is then covered by the health insurance system in case of illness or accidents.

The following website contains further useful information and some of the forms you will need:http://www.euraxess.lu/euraxess/Entry-conditions/Residence-permit

We recommend any prospective people wanting to be an au pair in Luxembourg contact theemployment office in Luxembourg and their local embassy for current requirements.  If your country of residence does not have a Luxembourg Embassy or Consulate, in most instances, it is possible to seek information from the Embassy of The Netherlands or Belgium.
