Au Pair In Iceland Mandatory Criteria
The permit (temporary) must be received outside of Iceland. Allow 90 days for the application to be processed. Documents must be in English or a Scandanavian language and if translated, must be done so by an accredited translator.
Nationals from some countries also require a "D" visa, which can be applied for at an Icelandic Embassy or the closest embassy authorised to issue visas for Iceland. After arriving in Iceland, the au pair registers at the National Registry. The medical certificate and passport is taken to the Directorate of Immigration where the au pair will be photographed.
Once all requirements have been fulfilled, the residence permit is issued and the date of issue is the beginning of residency.
Nationals from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden do not require a residence permit. EEA nationals wanting to stay more than 3 months in Iceland require a residence permit.

Au Pair In Iceland Mandatory Criteria
- To be an au pair in Iceland, you must fulfil the basic conditions for a residence permit, i.e. that financial support, medical insurance and housing is secure
- An au pair in Iceland must be between 18 - 25 years old
- The au pair and the host family must provide a signed contract (available from the Directorate of Immigration or the Labor Office
- The au pair must provide a criminal record check and a medical certificate
- An au pair in Iceland is paid 10.000 IKR per week pocket money
- An au pair in Iceland works 30 hours per week, has 2 days off per week, minimum of 1 weekend off per month
- An au pair in Iceland is entitled to 1 week holiday per 6 months
- An au pair in Iceland is to be provided with their own room and meals and also have free access to the family home
- An au pair in Iceland must have proficient English in the absence of Icelandic
- An au pair in Iceland is encouraged to attend a language class and adequate time needs to be allocated in the au pair schedule to attend
- An au pair in Iceland is able to stay for up to 12 months maximum and cannot be extended or renewed
- An au pair in Iceland must have medical insurance which must cover at least 2.000.000 Icel.kr. and must be issued by an insurance company authorised to provide services in Iceland. The insurance must be in effect for a minimum of 6 months.
- EEA nationals need to check if their private insurance covers them in Iceland. If not, they will need to take out an appropriate policy
- The host family must pay for the au pair's return journey home at the end of a successful contract
