There is an official au pair in Denmark scheme and there are a number of requirements for both the au pair and the host family.
Official Au Pair in Denmark Contracts
- Au pair in Denmark Contract (opens in new browser window)
- To be an au pair in Denmark, you must be between the age of 17 and 29 at the time of application
- You must be able to speak and understand a reasonable level of Danish, English, German, Norwegian or Swedish
- There must be a written contract between the host family and the au pair
- Be neither married, nor have been married, nor be living with a partner, nor have dependent children
- You must have completed high school or equivalent education
- Not have previously had a Danish residence permit
- Not had more than 2 au pair stays in other countries
- It is also possible to be an au pair in Denmark for a retired couple (but both must be pensioners and additional criteria apply)
- At least one host parent must be a Danish citizen and there must be at least one child under 18 years of age living at home
- Pay the return trip home if the au pair is a non-EU resident
- Comply with au pair in Denmark registration and insurance requirements - see "insurances" below
Pocket Money
- An au pair in Denmark receives a minimum monthly allowance of DKK 3,150
- An au pair in Denmark is required to do daily chores for 3-5 hours per day (i.e. 18-30 hours per week)
- Daily hours must not exceed 5 hours
- An au pair in Denmark must be provided with their own private bedroom in the family's home and all meals
- This also applies during holidays and any time of illness
- For non-EU au pairs, the host family must pay for the trip home
- In the event you wish to change host families and a new contract is entered, then the new host family assumes responsibility for the trip home costs
- EU au pairs pay for the travel costs to and from Denmark
Language skills and courses
- An au pair in Denmark must be able to speak and understand a reasonable level of Danish, English, German, Norwegian or Swedish
- An au pair in Denmark must be allowed sufficient time to participate in language courses as well as other cultural and professional interests. Attendance is optional
- A residence permit may be granted for a maximum of 24 months but no longer than the duration of your au pair in Denmark contract. It is possible to extend your permit if it is less than 24 months with either the same host family or a new host family but you must abide by the conditions of extending the permit
Insurances
- The host family must register the au pair as a resident at their address with the Central Person Register and they must be covered by the Danish National Health Insurance. Responsibility also lies on the host family to unregister the au pair when they leave the country. The host familymust also take out three types of insurance covering the au pair - insurance covering work related injuries, leisure time and accidents, and cost for the au pair to return to their homeland in the case of death, serious illness or accident

Driving
- An au pair in Denmark must have a full, valid licence if required to drive
- We recommend obtaining an international driving permit from your home country if your licence is not valid on its own in Denmark

Visa Information
- Au Pairs who are Nordic citizens are free to live, study and work as an au pair in Denmark. EU/EEA citizens (including Swiss citizens) are subject to the freedom of movement rule set by the EU. Anyone who plans to stay for longer then 3 months or work (for any period with a minimum of 6 months) in Denmark must apply for a registration certificate (EU/EEA citizens). All non-Nordic/EU/EEA citizens (third-country nationals) must also apply for a residence card.
